Frequently Asked QUESTIONS

FAQ

Can I use an existing well for my Geo loop?

The use of an existing well is a possibility but generally not conducive to a proper closed loop installation. The depth of the well and size of casing will be a consideration. Vertical loops are generally drilled by way of a 3' casing to a depth determined by the loop requirement. The well is then filled with a slurry to optimize heat transfer. The number of wells required is calculated as per the heating / cooling load of the home

Protect your furnace!

Electrical surge protection is a common consideration for all our electronics in the home.

Leaking water hydrants?

Removing your garden hoses in the fall will allow the siphon on the wall hydrant to function. Doing so ensures all water has been drained out of the system and will prevent a burst pipe and a costly repair.

Date stamp your furnace filter

Monitor your filter changes more effectively by dating the filter whenever you replace it

Leaving town? Shut off the water.

If you plan on being away for a few days, turn off the water supply to the house. This will eliminate potential flooding should the system fail in your absence.

Know where your main water shutoff is located

Make a point of locating your main water shutoff, ensure it is well labelled and advise everyone in your household on its function.

Soldering copper

Your solder should always be placed on the opposite side of the pipe where the flame is directed. Solder always travels to heat and will circle the pipe to the source. Ensure pipe is fluxed and sanded for proper seal

Want to save on heating costs?

You can save up to 10% on your heating bill by simply turning down your thermostat by 1 degree

Water flow issues? Check the aerator

If you find your faucet not giving you enough water, check the aerator. They are easily removed and should be cleaned periodically.

Install pressure gauges on either side of your water filter

An easy way to determine whether it's time to change your whole house water filter(s) is to install a second pressure gauge after your filter(s).

Make sure you have enough chimney

A rule of thumb for determining how much chimney you need for proper woodstove performance is to measure the distance from the bottom of the stove to the top of the chimney (cap) - you should have at least 15 feet.

Replace your old mechanical thermostat

Replace your old mechanical thermostat. Installing a new programmable thermostat will save you money!

Avoid using 90* elbows when installing stove pipe

Avoid using 90* elbows when installing stove pipe. Use 45* elbows whenever possible for horizontal installations and 30* elbows for vertical installations. Doing so will ensure better draft.
